Cocktail author: Victor Cabrin (based on Difford’s Guide). According to other sources it was Harry MacElhone who swapped creme de menthe for gin and created Blue Lady.

Blue Lady is a fun, simple cocktail with a rather long and complicated history, even though it looks like it just came from the 80s.

For such a straight forward drink, its history is quite hazy. My early research led me to believe that it was Victor Cabrin, who invented the cocktail back in 20s or 30s However, later I found some conflicting accounts crediting the cocktail to Harry MacElhone. Stating that it was him who swapped creme de menthe for gin and created the Blue Lady. I guess we will never know for sure.

Specs for Blue Lady are quite simple. Sweet orange notes of blue curacao blends with the juniper of gin and is balanced by the fresh sourness of lemon. I have made a couple of changes to the original recipe. I have increased the amount of egg white to 22,5 ml. It is a perfect amount based on my previous experience. It offers a fine layer of egg white foam, giving a lovely texture to the cocktail. Second, is expressing a touch of orange peel oils over the cocktail, to emphasize the orange notes and give a little bit more taste to the layer of foam.

So, if you are looking for a simple, slightly unusual, but a fun looking cocktail Blue Lady is good place to start.
