Recently I was craving for some lighter style long drink and in my research came across the recipe for El Diablo. This caught my attention, especially since it was invented and popularized by “Trader” Vic, who is better known for his rum cocktails.

As many of the tall drinks are, El Diablo is pretty straight forward and easy to mix. In general, you can skip the shaken part and just combine the ingredients directly in the glass ending up with still a great drink. However, if you are willing to go the extra mile I highly recommend to shake first three ingredients first, to combine them better and incorporate some air into the drink. Additionally, when toping with ginger beer, try to avoid pouring it directly on the ice in order to preserve as much effervescence as possible.

For a quite simple drink El Diablo presents a rather complex taste profile. First of all, you are greeted by the fresh sweet and biting notes of ginger beer which are balanced by the sourness of lime and supported by the fruity tastes of black currant. While all of this is going on you can still feel some vegetable agave tastes lurking in the background and tying everything up together. So, if you find yourself with jonesing for a good drink, I highly recommend trying it.
