Grasshopper

COCKTAIL INGREDIENTS:
- 30 ml White Creme de Cacao
- 30 ml Creme de Menthe
- 30 ml Heavy Cream

GARNISH:
- Freshly grated nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS:
• Combine all of the ingredients in a cocktail shaker.
• Add ice and shake until chilled.
• Double strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
• Garnish with some freshly grated nutmeg.

 

Cocktail author: It is unclear who exactly invented the cocktail back in the early 1920s, so slightly different cocktail specs can be found depending on the bartender preparing the cocktail.

Grasshopper is a fun, perhaps slightly decadent cocktail, with a long history and is perfectly suited to start the new year on a happy note. Grasshopper first appeared in the late 1910s, but reached its peak in popularity much later, around the 1970s and 1980s.

 I have found a few slightly different specs of this cocktail, but after tasting them, I still believe there is no alternative to the original. Simple, elegant and amazingly effective combination of three ingredients in equal parts, as simple as it gets.

 For me, personally, grasshopper is similar to a creamy mint chocolate with a nutmeg finish. Rich in its texture, cacao sweetness, yet perfectly balanced by the coolness of mint. A great way to treat oneself after a busy day. So, if you are looking for something indulgent, I highly recommend making one at home.
