Cocktail author: Unknown, cocktail itself dates back to the mid XIX century.
There are few other cocktails, so fundamental to the cocktail world as Corpse Reviver No.2. Throughout the history it has fallen into obscurity a couple of times, only to come back again and again. Simple, effective and very tasty equal parts recipe with easily accessible ingredients, probably had something to do with its survival and bringing this cocktail to the menus in countless bars.
Since it is equal parts cocktail, it is difficult to name base spirit. One might argue that gin with notes of juniper and slight hint of citrus forms the base, but that is probably more of a technicality. Bright, subtly sweet and bitter wine-based Lillet Blanc certainly does not stay in the shadow of gin and, for me, it dictates the theme for the cocktail, together with a subtle aniseed hint of absinthe. Triple sec plays well with Lillet and gin by bringing delicious, citrusy, sweet orange notes to the mix. Finally, touch of lemon juice balances the cocktail with some fresh tart juice.
Corpse Reviver No.2 is a magnificent cocktail that is quite easy to make and is absolutely worth the effort. I chose to garnish the cocktail with orange twist and dried rose bud to further expand the aromatic dimension and was quite surprised how well it went. So if you have an opportunity I recommend trying this garnish.
