In recent decades, punches somewhat fell out of fashion, but with hundreds of bartenders rediscovering classic and long forgotten cocktails, it is natural that punches also start to reappear on our radars. Punches get a bit of a bad reputation, due to years and years of people throwing all kinds of liquor and juices together into big bowls and calling it a “punch”. Luckily, every now and again one stumbles upon a new, well-balanced and though-out recipe that piques one’s interest – like Oaxacan Punch. (However, I did not have plans to entertain a large party any time soon, so I had to rework this delicious recipe into a single serving.)
Base of the punch is split between smoky vegetal agave notes of mezcal and complex, bitter-sweet caramel, liquorice and orange notes of Averna. Two ingredients with distinct bold flavour profiles, create a solid foundation for a punch. Lime and grapefruit juices brings tasty, slightly bitter tartness to the mix, helping to tame and offset sweetness of the amaro and boldness of the mezcal. Generous amount of ginger beer lengthens the cocktail while providing a refreshing effervescent ginger bite to it. Final touch of agave nectar, balances cocktail out letting other flavours pop and ensures a pleasurable drinking experience.
Oaxacan Punch, is a refreshing and unique riff on the classic punch, taking it in a slightly different direction than, the classic rum-based fruity punches. Great as a single serve cocktail or a punch to quench the thirst of the masses.
