Manhattan is a very well-known and beloved cocktail, so any riff on it, comes with certain expectations and has big shoes to fill. In my humble opinion, this cocktail does not disappoint.

Black Manhattan for the most part stays true to the original recipe, by blending oaky, peppery rye whiskey with a dash of rich aromatic bitters and orange bitters to lift some of the subtler notes of the base spirit and bridge the gap between the ingredients. Where things take a new turn is switching sweet vermouth for amaro Averna. This choice brings a lot of additional complexity with tastes of caramel, licorice, orange and bitterness to the mix, which help to deliciously tame the alcohol forward drink.

All in all, Black Manhattan manages to take the classic cocktail into a new and tasty direction with a very simple yet effective change. It is a must try for all cocktail enthusiasts and especially classic Manhattan lovers.
