Recipe author: Unknown. It is believed that the cocktail was created at the Locke-Ober Café in Boston’s eighth ward in 1898.

With the summer ending, the time has come to start moving slowly away from lighter style summer drinks and dive back into the world of stronger classic cocktails. This time I am starting with pre-prohibition era cocktail - Ward 8.

This cocktail builds on a classic sour cocktail template with some quick twists and turns. Base of the cocktail follows the textbook with 60 ml of the rye whisky and it’s caramel, vanilla notes felt all the way from the first to the very last sip. Twist and turns come later with simple syrup replaced by the grenadine paired well with the semi-sweet orange juice. Together these components counterbalance the sourness of lemon and provide some sweet fruity flavors. (However, if you are a true sour cocktail lover I would recommend reducing grenadine to perhaps 10 ml.) While Ward 8 perhaps is not the best cocktail in the world it is a delicious classic sipper that will brighten your evenings.
