Cocktail author: unknown, cocktail traces its history back to the colonial times.

Warm cocktails could be a delightful addition to your holiday celebration and this recipe for hot buttered rum ticks all the marks: delicious, warming and full of holiday spices.

Traditionally, Hot Buttered Rum is made with a touch of butter added at the last second leaving you with a layer of milk fat floating on top of the drink. Not too appetizing. This recipe circumvents the problem by mixing butter into a pre-made batter, that incorporates much easier into the hot water and rum mixture, resulting in a much more uniform cocktail.

Flavour profile is defined by molasses and caramel notes of rum blending with a mix of holiday spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg. Sugar adds a little bit of sweetness, which when combined with ice cream and butter results in almost creamy decadent texture. Irresistible when garnished with freshly grated nutmeg and slightly smoldering stick of cinnamon.

Hot buttered rum is an interesting cocktail with long and complex history and while it might not be for everyone’s taste, I do encourage trying it.
