Cocktail author: Fernández Marchante’s take on the classic cocktail from Northern Spain.

For many Spanish drinking culture primarily associates with wine and sangria, but that is rather short-sighted. Quite a few delicious cocktails like Rebujito, Barraquito and Pomada come from Spain not mentioning the influence on countless other popular drinks. Marianito is one tasty drink from the same lineage.

Base of the cocktail is not the usual strong spirit, but sweet vermouth with rich fruity and herbal notes. It is then boosted by the modest addition of boozy juniper forward London dry gin. Campari brings the Negroni like bitter-sweet quality to the drink modified by the vermouth and increasing the overall complexity. However, for me, the greatest twist comes from Pomelo juice. It brings a distinct fruity aromatic sweetness to the mix completely transforming the drink and binding the ingredients together. Finally, a couple of dashes of Angostura brings further aromatic complexity seasoning the cocktail.

All in all, Marianito is quite a unique vermouth-based cocktail full of complexity and delicious twists and turns. Great under the scorching Spanish sun, or simply to relax with after a long and hard day.
