Lately I have been experimenting with some coconut rum and came up with a rather interesting mix of ingredients, which I decided to name after The Grateful Dead, or rather one of their songs, since I have been listening to them quite often recently.
Base of the cocktail is split between aged blended rum and coconut rum (preferably Spirited Union) blending notes of sweet molasses, dried fruit and coconut combined with vanilla. I paired these rums with sweet, but complex and aromatic lychee liqueur. Refreshing tartness comes from lime juice, that continues the tropical theme, so familiar from other rum based cocktails. I had to balance it with a touch of simple syrup, to let the flavours pop a little bit more, but do not let any one particular note dominate the others. At this point the cocktail was good, but still missing one last touch – elderflower liqueur. Just a little dose, brings delicious fragrance, subtly hiding among the other ingredients, almost unnoticeable, but adding its own little magic touch.
All in all, Ripple is bright, light and fragrant cocktail taking inspiration from daisy and tiki style drinks. Made for summer, but just as delicious in the middle of dark and cold winter.
