Salty Dog might not be the most complex and difficult drink to make, but when made right and with good ingredients it provides great drinking experience. In principle Salty Dog is a Greyhound with a salt rim. It is a quick and simple twist yielding great results.

There is a free choice of base spirit between London dry gin and vodka. I personally prefer gin and how juniper interacts with that healthy dose of bitter-tart grapefruit juice. However, I can imagine how it would also work with vodka, so choose whichever spirit you prefer. Addition of salt rim helps to expand the flavour profile by adding one more dimension while at the same time taming the bitter notes of grapefruit.

All in all, Salty Dog is a simple and easy to make drink. Perhaps it is a bit obscure, but if you are looking for an alternative to your evening gin and tonic, without putting more effort, Salty Dog might just be the right choice.
